For decades, tobacco, alcohol, and drug abuse have cast a long shadow over public health. Their toll on human lives is staggering, resulting in preventable deaths that number in the millions each year. However, the landscape of addiction is changing, with a new, rapidly growing menace: smartphone addiction. Its potential consequences have been likened to those of notorious substance abuse, underscoring the urgency of addressing this emerging issue.

Recognizing the pressing need to confront the harm caused by tobacco, especially smoking, alcohol, drugs, and the swiftly growing challenge of smartphone (mobile) addiction, the Indian Medical Academy for Preventive Health (IMAPH) has taken proactive steps. Through focused prevention efforts and health awareness campaigns, IMAPH has endeavoured to make a difference in communities grappling with the increasing numbers of drug users, smokers, and alcohol consumers year after year. It is within this context that the Asian Coalition for Health Empowerment (ACHE) came into existence.

The mission of the Asian Coalition for Health Empowerment (ACHE) is rooted in the principles of harm reduction and the pursuit of SDG-3. Our unwavering commitment to this cause has resulted in remarkable progress and significant milestones

Efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG-3), focusing on ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all, are central to addressing the persistent health risks associated with alcohol, drug abuse, smoking, and mobile addiction. These issues pose significant threats to individuals and communities globally. The World Health Organization’s 2021 report highlights that harmful alcohol use results in 3 million deaths annually, while smoking claims over 8 million lives each year. Illicit drug use remains a critical public health concern, with the 2021 World Drug Report revealing that approximately 275 million people used drugs worldwide in the preceding year. In the digital age, mobile addiction has emerged as a new challenge, with reports indicating that teenagers in the US spend over seven hours daily on-screen entertainment. Achieving SDG-3 is an ongoing endeavor, demanding dedication, collaboration, awareness, policy changes, and effective Doctor Against Addiction (DAAD) strategies to address these complex health issues.

The Advisory Board on Doctor Against Addiction (DAAD): Guiding Light in the Fight Against Addiction

Addictions, encompassing drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and smartphones, have surged to epidemic proportions. To effectively address these issues and employ strategies for harm reduction, it necessitates a systematic approach wherein public health experts assume a pivotal role. They are instrumental in showcasing their expertise regarding the detrimental impacts of these addictions, enlightening the public, fostering awareness, and proposing methodologies to alleviate these harms. Proficient public health experts can also provide valuable recommendations to policymakers, equipping individuals with specialized health education. To realise this mission, the Asian Coalition for Health Empowerment (ACHE) has instituted an ‘Advisory Board,’ consisting of public health experts who champion harm reduction through their discourse. They also contribute by crafting articles and blogs across diverse media channels to shed light on this critical issue.

The depth and breadth of these challenges necessitate a nuanced approach. ACHE recognizes the imperative to address addiction in all its various forms, be it nicotine dependence, alcoholism, substance abuse, or the captivating allure of smartphones. Our stance is one of hope—a beacon for individuals grappling with these issues. We champion de-addiction programs that are thoughtfully tailored to meet the unique needs of affected individuals.

In our unwavering quest to mitigate harm, we wholeheartedly embrace the Science of Harm Reduction—a comprehensive global framework that encompasses proven strategies and practices for reducing the adverse consequences of addiction. Our network of Key Scientific Opinion Leaders (KSOLs), consisting of public health experts and specialists, plays a pivotal role in educating individuals about the perils of addiction. This education takes the form of informative webinars and enlightening articles authored by these distinguished experts. To add weight to our mission, we’ve assembled an advisory board comprising renowned specialists.

At the heart of our vision is the prioritization of smoking cessation. India, home to over 100 million smokers, faces a daunting challenge. ACHE is dedicated to empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to break free addiction, following global best practices.
